I hear their wails at night, their cries for rescue. They aren’t alive. I’m not even sure there’re human.
Funny, I used to think I was crazy, that everything was all a giant hallucination. Several psychologists later, I realized maybe I wasn’t so crazy. After all, hallucinations don’t touch you.
I don’t want this gift-this curse to see the dead. I didn’t sign up for it. Unfortunately, Fate has other plans for me, regardless of a signature.
“Stop it,” I grumble at one of the more daring ghosts as it twirls a strand of my hair around its bony, skeletal fingers. A low, gravelly sound I assume to be a laugh is the only response. I glare at the translucent spirit, though it probably can’t see. It’s missing one eye and the other is swollen shut.
“What happened to you? To all of you?,” I almost ask, I really do; but that involves having an actual conversation with one of those….Things.
But I didn’t sign up for this!
