Oxford police charged Matthew Huey Haynes, 30, with felony unlawful breaking and entering of a vehicle. Police said Haynes broke the rear window of a GMC truck owned by Stone and Sons Electrical Contractor and stole a backpack and a purse containing credit cards from it.
Haynes has been in custody since he was arrested last Friday on two other felony counts -– illegal possession/use of a credit card and possession of burglar’s tools. Police said they found the stolen credit cards and a window puncher in Haynes’ car when they arrested him.
The arrest came after Haynes led police on a 30-minute car chase Friday evening that ended when he decided to pull over, according to police records. Earlier that day, Stone and Sons employees told police that a purple Camaro was parked next to the GMC truck in the business’ back lot before it was broken into. About five hours later, police identified the same vehicle driving on County Line Road, Owens said. When the officer turned on his lights to indicate the driver should pull over, the Camaro fled.
Police chased Haynes along County Line and Circle roads. According to police, Haynes was throwing things out of the car while he sped down Circle Road at 60 mph –- well over the 35 mph speed limit. He eventually pulled over when he realized he couldn’t escape, police said. The credit cards, purse and backpack found in Haynes’ possession led to the felony breaking and entering charge, Owens said. Other breaking and entering charges are pending.
Haynes was also arrested on nine misdemeanor charges, including possession of the stolen items from the Stone and Sons truck, fleeing a police officer, reckless endangerment, failure to stop at a stop sign, and failure to wear a seat-belt, police records show. Bond is set for $5,000.
