Hibbett Sports, which has stores in Jacksonville and Oxford, is planning to open a new location at the Anniston Plaza, home of Big Lots and Zaxby’s north of downtown.
“We’re really trying to get open before school starts, but it’s not all in our hands at this point,” said Jeff Gray, vice president of real estate for the Birmingham-based Hibbett Sports.
Gray said the planned 4,200 square-foot store at 3500 McClellan Blvd. will likely provide eight to nine people with full- or part-time jobs.
Hibbett has been trying to open a store in Anniston, particularly at the Anniston Plaza, for years because other stores in the area have been so successful, Gray said. The new store, which is smaller than the company’s average of 5,700 square feet, will be similar to those nearby, but customer trends may help the company target the focus of the footwear, apparel and equipment in the smaller space.
The new location, he added, fills a pocket between the company’s Jacksonville and Oxford locations in what he said is the city’s strongest retail area — from the plaza north to the Anniston Walmart — near where U.S. 431 meets Alabama 21 and the Veterans Memorial Parkway will eventually tie in.
Gray noted that other tenants in the shopping center do well. Statistics for the Anniston Plaza on the website of Real Estate Southeast, the company that manages the shopping center, show 2011 retail sales of nearly $804 million and an average traffic count of 39,400 vehicles per day that year.
Attempts to reach Real Estate Southeast were unsuccessful Tuesday.
