We have faithfully followed a recent series by NPR's Planet Money

Here's the hook. Planet Money set out to create a T-shirt. Reporters followed the process as the raw material and the manufacturing of this garment skipped across the globe. It's the best explanation of the intricacies of global trade we've ever come across in a long time.

As contributing editor Alex Blumberg says

Behind this shirt is an entire world.

Today's installment - The Giant Book That Creates And Destroys Entire Industries - includes this amazing fact:

Protecting U.S. trade means following an incredibly elaborate set of rules spelled out in a giant book that's more than 3,000 pages long. Michael Cone, a customs and international trade attorney in New York, calls it "the book of everything." Its official name is the Harmonized Tariff Schedule of the United States.
