The burn area, 12 miles northeast of Talladega, will be bounded in part by Forest Service Road 646, according to a release from the Forest Service. Fire crews and equipment will be around the area during the burn. Smoke might also be visible on Cleburne County Road 42 and from Cheaha State Park.
Wind is expected to carry the smoke toward the Cheaha State Park area, the release said. Smoke might settle as temperatures cool tonight in the Chinnabee and Cheaha drainages. Drivers in the area are urged to use caution and their low-beam headlights.
The burn is part of 28,000 acres the Forest Service plans to burn this year. Controlled burns are fires set and monitored by Forest Service workers.
The burns are intended to remove fuel that could lead to uncontrollable fires if allowed to accumulate. They also help promote the growth of longleaf pines by burning away competitor species.
