After a morning in darkness, the lights are back on in Anniston.

A power outage shut off traffic lights and darkened homes and business in much of downtown and northern Anniston, affecting 2,100 of customers in the area, according to Keisa Sharpe-Johnson, a spokeswoman with Alabama Power Co.

Several businesses, including most of the stores in the Anniston Plaza on McClellan Boulevard, were closed this morning due to the outage. At the busy intersection of Alabama 21 and U.S. 431, four police officers were directing morning traffic around 10 a.m.

Johnson said the outage began at 9:27 this morning, but that the cause was still unknown. Social media messages from Alabama Power attributed the outage to a tripped fuse, and said crews still were working to determine the cause.

Johnson said that power had been restored to all customers by 10:55 this morning.

By 11 a.m., traffic lights throughout the city were back up and running as power came back online.
