Ragland opened Class 1A, Region 6 play with a 41-7 win over Donoho at Lentz Field Friday night.

Devin Wilson led the Purple Devils with two touchdowns in the win at Donoho. There were significant contributions from Nick Daniels and Devane Brewster as well.

“This was a big region win that we needed to help get us started on the right foot,” Ragland coach Brian Mintz said. “Although this was a big win, we must continue to improve.”

Improvement will also be key among Donoho’s tasks in the coming weeks.

“We played well at times, but we’ve got to learn how to overcome adversity,” Donoho coach Shannon Felder said. “I knew we would have some growing pains this season, but we must continue to improve each week.”

Donoho started off its region contest against Ragland with a bit of trickery that later proved to be no major factor in the outcome.

After electing to receive the kick, Donoho preceded to advance the ball to their own 42 yard line for an obvious punting situation.

Walker Mason took the direct snap on the fake punt all the way to the 21-yard line. Later in the drive, Donoho went for it on fourth-and-7.

The play resulted in a 19 yard touchdown pass from William Nunnelley to Will Montgomery to put Donoho up 7-0 following the extra point with 9:14 to go in the first quarter.

The first quarter ended with Donoho still up Ragland 7-0.

The Purple Devils struck back on a 12-yard run up the middle by Nick Daniels with 9:10 to go in the second quarter, tying the score at 7.

Ragland scored two more times in the half including a touchdown reception by Jimmy Brock with 58 seconds to go in the half which put Ragland up 20-7. It was never close after that.

Ragland continued to pour it on in the third quarter by running the ball downhill play after play. JohnMark Mintz pounded a 20-yard handoff into the end zone with seven seconds to go, putting Ragland up 34-7.

Ragland scored one more time in the fourth on a 50-yard scamper by Devane Brewster to make it 41-7.

Ragland ended the game with 377 total yards to the Falcons’ 208.

Mason led Donoho with 121 yards on 13 carries.

Devin Wilson led Ragland with 78 yards, but was closely followed by Daniels and Brewster who each had 65 yards. Brock and Scotty Smith each had an interception in the game as well for Ragland.

Both teams had their share of penalties. Ragland ended the game with 12 penalties for 102 yards and Donoho had 6 penalties for 55 yards.
