Investigators believe Robert David Lewis, of Kennesaw, Ga., died from cardiac-related issues before his vehicle struck several trees off the highway, Brown said. According to the coroner, Lewis suffered no trauma from the wreck and his car had minimal damage.
Phillip Winkles, who investigated the incident for the Coroner’s Office, said he believes the death was cardiac-related because Smith, who was in Etowah County on a business trip, had complained of left-arm pain on Wednesday.
Brown said Lewis left sometime late Wednesday night or early Thursday morning to go home. A motorist traveling on U.S. 278 saw Lewis’ car off the road and got the attention of a Piedmont police officer around 4 a.m.
Efforts to reach officials with the Piedmont Police Department were unsuccessful Friday.
Brown said Lewis’ vehicle was found just inside Calhoun County from the Etowah County line.
