ALEXANDRIA — Everyone has a role on the Alexandria baseball team, and when coach Andy Shaw puts the pieces together, winning games is always the result.

The Valley Cubs finished with a 26-13 record and won their third consecutive Class 4A, Area 11 championship. As a result, Shaw is The Anniston Star’s Calhoun County Class 4A-6A baseball coach of the year.

“We had a great group of seniors that were not all superstars, but they played their role on the team,” Shaw said. “They carried on a tradition that was set before them from guys in the past, which is being as good as we can be and competing for an area championship and trying to get as far as we can in the playoffs.

“If kids are about the team, it’s not a problem. We don’t have a problem because our kids want to win.”

Of Shaw’s large group of seniors, catcher Jake Whiting, center fielder Justice Owens and shortstop Dalton Cobb each played large roles, hitting more than .400 on the season with Whiting and Cobb also having an on-base percentage of .532.

“We were pretty solid all the way around,” Whiting said. “Our starting pitching was great. We were just solid. But hitting was probably the best part of our game. We hit from the top to bottom of our lineup.”

Behind strong pitching — from Logan Doss, who went 6-2 with a 1.98 ERA, and others — the Valley Cubs made a familiar trip to the third round of the playoffs.

“We have the type of players that are working hard and we did an outstanding job with pitching this year,” Shaw said. “Our pitching and hitting was outstanding this year. We made people beat us.”
