Five years ago, Jacksonville Garden Club members discussed establishing a demonstration garden on city property. A site was selected on Francis Street West, next to the Ladiga Trail. It’s now called Chief Ladiga Park Gardens.

Each year, with help from Jacksonville Master Gardeners, city workers, and volunteers, garden club members have been able to maintain the gardens and even make them larger.

A dedication was held at noon Saturday. Garden club member Klaus Duncan introduced Mayor Johnny Smith who thanked everyone for their part in the gardens’ beautification.

Also speaking were president Dr. Sheila Webb; superintendent of parks and recreation Janis Burns and member Sandra Kelly.

The uncultivated land that has become a landmark in the city is frequented by trail users, many of whom come from out of town.

Plants are donated by garden club members and citizens. Much of the upkeep is done by volunteer garden club members and Master Gardner interns. The cacti garden is a collection of species donated by citizens, and the gazebo was given by Jacksonville State University. Its reconstruction was completed by the parks and recreation department. The picnic tables are a gift from Commissioner Rudy Abbott.

A blue-bird trail which winds through the JSU campus, depot, garden and community is maintained by garden club members, as are a greenhouse, a pocket park, the depot, plantings on the square and at the community center, the Jacksonville Christian Outreach Center garden and the Kitty Stone Elementary School butterfly garden.

The club also sponsors a historic tree and beautification awards periodically and give away plants on Arbor Day.
