BAE systems has announced that they will be laying off as many as 259 workers starting in September due to declining orders from the government.
BAE, the world's second-largest defense contractor, has locations on 10th Street and Coleman Road in Anniston. The company's local plants produce and repair armored vehicles.
Local spokeswoman Cindy Garrison said that the layoffs will continue through March 2010. Garrison added that the company has e-mailed employees to inform them of the layoffs and will meet with the workers on Monday.
The announcement comes less than a year after BAE announced it was laying off 230 workers in October.
Kelly Golden, national spokeswoman, said that the job cuts are across the board and are the result of a reduction in government orders for the M88 recovery vehicle and the M113 armored personnel carrier.
"This is regrettable and never easy, but at this point it's something that had to be done because of the reduction in the orders from the government," Golden said.
Garrison said the Anniston plants' business is analogous to the war effort in the Middle East, "Even after the layoffs this year, we will have almost 200 more workers than we had in 2003."

Pass the cheese and wine please?

Cheese!
Say cheese! ha ha
Great Name! My mom's name was Anna Lee.
I am obviously so disfunctional. I was just trying to make a joke about the absurdity of it all.
Oh well, maybe I continue to be dislexic....
Take care,
Cash-for-Clunkers never included cars that old; only vehicles as old as 25 years (made in 1984);
the old trade-in vehicles must get 18 mpg or less;
you would not get the cash, but something like a voucher or rebate at the car dealership;
and you would be stuck with a monthly new car payment and high auto insurance for several years.
Do you want some of my cheese?
I am just teasing, as I hope you are.
I do have an 89 truck, but it serves its purpose in hauling things for me a couple of times a year. I think last year I drove it 300 miles. I don't plan to take advantage of the $3500-4500 offer even though I guess I could.
I do have several friends who lean to the right though, who bought Ford F250-350, Hummers, Taho's and etc., when your President was in office, because they got a tax writeoff.
Take care,
Winner :)
Ummm, that you be you. Winner?????
Loser with wanting a handout!!!!!
We won.
It's whiners, dear, we are the winners, you are the whiners. Winners=win Whiners=lost
"Got new for you. There are no winners here except Obama.
If you think you are ahead of the game. Boy do I feel sorry for you."
If you think you are ahead of the game. Boy do I feel sorry for you.
By the way....hope you don't get to stimulated, Obama planned so well, gone in 4 days.
Great Idea!
Plus, I have a $500.00 dollar 1989 Ranger Pickmeup that I can now get 3500-4500 for in trade. That not only stimulates the autobuilders, but it stimulates me.
Maybe I can't stand that much stimulation at my age?????
We won.
You lost.
Get over it.
Duh
obama promised all so many jobs, right?
Am "I" the only one missing somethin' here?
Cash for clunkers went beiiy-up in 4 days!!!! How many days will we have health care????
But if you are driving a clunker can you afford a new car? Maybe those who can afford it can buy a clunker from those who can't and then trade it in. But then the clunker drivers will be without cars because all the clunkers will be gone.
