Assault weapons out of control

There seem to be a lot of things out of control these days. I will not try to address all of those I can think of, just one that has been much in the news lately — use and control of automatic weapons and ammunition.

There seems to be an increase in gun violence with assault or military-type weapons. The U.S. Constitution’s Second Amendment is a favorite argument used by politicians, anti-gun control advocates and the National Rifle Association in opposition to sensible and reasonable gun-control measures. I don’t believe our Founding Fathers had this type of weapon or ammunition in mind when they wrote about the right to bear arms.

Some people apparently would like to see us go back to the days of the Old West with everyone carrying a sidearm and gunfights in the streets. I know there are thousands of legitimate gun owners who own guns to use for sporting purposes such as hunting, target shooting and collecting, and I certainly have no complaint about this type of gun use. But I don’t believe any true sportsman would have a need for assault weapons or large clips of ammunition for hunting or target shooting. Others who keep weapons for self-protection shouldn’t need this type of weapon, either.

The only people who need this type of weapon would be police or military personnel. I realize that even if these weapons were banned, criminal types could obtain and use them, but does this mean everyone should have access to them? I don’t see how anything in the Second Amendment would be violated by banning the sale of assault-type weapons and large clips of ammunition.
