Several area residents were chosen to attend the 2011 session of Alabama Governor’s School at Samford University June 19-July 1. They were among 80 outstanding rising high school seniors from 23 counties who attended the two-week honors program.

Area participants by town included, Anniston: Kelsey Grace Huie, Faith Christian School; and Zachary St. Clair, The Donoho School; Eastaboga: Morgan Hendon, Lincoln High School; Hobson City: Kayla Spurling, Oxford High School; Oxford: Amanda Parker, Oxford High School.

AGS participants received college-level experience in academics, creativity and leadership. Course topics included the arts, law, healthcare, research science, Alabama history and a dozen other subjects.

The students also enjoyed a service project at Shelby County’s historic Bailey Cemetery, a piano concert, a Birmingham Barons baseball game, a visit to American Village in Montevallo, and many campus recreational activities.

AGS students are nominated by their schools on the basis of academic ability, leadership qualities, creativity and community service. Selection is also based on teacher and guidance counselor nominations, and a written essay.
