Are you ‘kid-ing’?

One of many tremendous kid phrases goes like this. “Every child deserves at least one adult who is crazy about them.” The question then is, “Where are the adults and to whom are they paired?”

We have not a minute to waste considering these statistics: Every 10 seconds a child is abused; every 32 seconds a child is eyewitness to parents who divorce; every 36 seconds a child is born into poverty; every 60 seconds a child is born to a teen mother; every three minutes a child is arrested for illegal drugs; every 23 minutes a child is wounded by gunfire, and every four hours a child commits suicide.

Who, then, do you know that is crazy about kids? When you find that person, give them an emphatic high-five. They are valuable beyond monetary worth. I had a roommate in college named John Croyle, who has given his entire life for kids. Ever heard of the Big Oak Ranch? There are 1,250 employees in the Calhoun County school system. To this “kid-loving army,” let me offer you all a high-five and thanks for a job well done in this last school year.

To those who put together the spring football jamboree at Jacksonville State, two bits for your stroke of genius and added effort showcasing great high schools and great students at a great university. Coach Paul “Bear” Bryant often said, “You got to do a little extra to be a champion!” Would you not agree that self-centeredness is the worst enemy of kids?

Enemy No. 2 could be manipulating kids for political, egotistical or financial gain. So the clock is ticking and times a wasting. Let’s get busy. Find the nearest kid and go crazy over them. Why not begin with yours?
