Firefighters were called to a home on the 2200 block of Walnut Avenue after midnight Sunday to put out a fire on an outside door, according to a police report. A woman, believed to have been home alone at the time, smelled smoke and called the Fire Department, according to Anniston police Sgt. Josh Doggrell.
Officers at the scene estimated the damage to the door, door frame and some vinyl siding on the outside of the house to cost $350, according to the police report.
Doggrell said the firefighters called to the scene are investigating the cause of the fire and believe it could be arson. Police will follow up with the investigation today and interview the resident, he said.
Doggrell said it is often difficult to determine whether a fire was started due to arson, but said firefighters investigating the scene will check for the presence of fire accelerants and burn patters consistent with arson.
