Jacksonville State University is still trying to reach its goal of having 10,000 students on campus, but it may again elude the institution in 2013.

At an Exchange Club meeting Thursday Andy Green, director of enrollment management for JSU, said it’s still too early to say how many students will show up for class next fall. Green emphasized the significance of STU 101, a class that is aimed at getting freshman students to return to campus for their sophomore years.

“What they’re getting in that class can’t be quantified in credit hours,” Green said.

In the class, instructors explain which services such as counseling and financial aid are available to students. By explaining which services are available, Green said, JSU may be able to help students with issues that sometimes prompt them to leave.

“The response to STU 101 has been very positive,” Green said. “This next year is when we’re going to see the result.”

That’s because if the class was successful, JSU will see a higher retention rate among last year’s freshmen class.

Green said the class is one of several steps the university is taking to encourage students to return to campus year after year. If successful in boosting retention rates, the university may inch ever closer to reaching its 10,000 enrollment goal.

He added that it’s difficult to gauge how many students will be enrolled at JSU in the fall. He said that the university graduated 700 students this spring.

The loss of those students will be balanced, he said, by the roughly 1,300 freshman students he said he expects to see enroll at the institution at the start of the next school year.

Green also said that what is good for the university can also be good for the community.

“There is obviously a lot of impact,” Green said referencing the institution’s impact on the community. “The students are a major part of the community.”
