In The Star

Dec. 23, 1938, in The Star: A football stadium for Anniston High School was assured today after word came down that $20,000 worth of bonds had been approved by a New York bond attorney firm. The stadium will cost approximately $37,500, with the federal government contributing 45 percent of the cost as a Public Works Administration grant. Anniston voters had previously approved the bond issue. According to PWA rules, the project must begin this calendar year, so actual work will begin soon. Also this date: In other public improvement news, the Anniston City Council voted unanimously last night to pave a section of roadway between the Eulaton Road and Tenth Street. Calhoun County was responsible for recently getting Eulaton Road paved; the approved work will create a smooth link between it and a major east-west street. Additionally: The five WHMA announcers will have a busy schedule on their hands Saturday with numerous remote control broadcasts to be heard during the day. At least two, “The Kiddy Club” and “WHMA Jamboree,” will originate from the stage of the WHMA playhouse.

Dec. 23, 1988, in The Star: Magic Chef Inc.'s Anniston plant will cut its employees' salaries by 15 percent starting next month as part of an $8 million cost-cutting program designed to make the plant more competitive with Korean companies. General Manager Fred Gant said the cuts will affect all 403 employees at the Golden Springs plant — from the managers down to hourly workers. The staff was told of the pay reductions at a plantwide meeting earlier this week. At stake, Gant said, is the continued existence of Magic Chef's Anniston operation, which produces microwave ovens. Most of the company’s cost-cutting will be in the marketing department, as people no longer need to be sold on the need for a microwave oven, just on its value for the dollar.
