Alabama beats Stanford in paint, to play Maryland in NIT quarterfinals

TUSCALOOSA — Alabama controlled the paint and handled Stanford 66-54 in Saturday’s second-round National Invitation Tournament action in Coleman Coliseum.

The Crimson Tide (23-12), two years removed from a run to the NIT finals, will play host to Maryland in the quarterfinals Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. The winner advances to the semifinals in New York’s Madison Square Garden.

With guards attacking the basket, Alabama outscored Stanford 28-14 in the paint and hit 22 of 26 free throws. The Tide also outscored Stanford 17-5 off turnovers.

Levi Randolph led Alabama with 16 points, and Retin Obasohan added 14. Trevor Releford and Nick Jacobs added 10 apiece.

Stanford (19-15), the defending NIT champion, got 11 points from Chasson Randle and 10 from Robbie Lemons.
