Tax collections for the state Education Trust Fund in October through February rose 4.8 percent compared to the same period a year earlier, but state officials said a little digging showed that the news really wasn't so rosy.

That not-so-rosy view was what led Gov. Robert Bentley to chop this year's budgeted trust fund spending on Monday by $163 million. The trust fund is the main source of state tax dollars for public schools and colleges.
