The state is nearing the sixth anniversary of a tragic loss, the 2003 death of Bailey Thomson, an accomplished writer, top-notch educator and prolific advocate for constitutional reform.

Thomson's 1999 editorial series "Dixie's Broken Heart," which was published in the Mobile Press-Register, illustrates in human terms the awful toll exacted by the 1901 Constitution. Ten years past the publication of this masterpiece, the job of correcting Alabama's institutional wrongs remains unfinished.

Since 2007, Alabama Citizens for Constitutional Reform has played host to the Bailey Thomson Awards Luncheon, honoring those who work diligently to improve the state.

The 2009 ceremony approaches. On Aug. 27 in Huntsville, the ACCR will honor Albert Brewer, former governor, and Gorman Houston, former Supreme Court chief justice, as well as others. Brewer, who was The Star's 2008 Alabamian of the Year, and Houston are fighting to unshackle this state. We applaud the ACCR for its wise selections. We encourage anyone interested to attend the festivities, which will also include Calhoun County's very own Rick Bragg as the keynote speaker.

The tax-deductible tickets are $50. The benefits for supporting this worthy cause are incalculable.
