A 10-year-old girl was reportedly abused for nine months by her mother’s ex-husband in Piedmont, officials at the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office said today.

Matthew Wade, chief deputy, said the girl is cared for by another woman because the mother does not have custody of her child. Wade said the girl was inappropriately touched by her mother’s ex-husband during visits to a home on Whites Gap Road in Piedmont.

A report from the Sheriff’s Office showed the abuse occurred from May 1, 2012 until Feb. 1, 2013, after the ex-husband reportedly moved out of the mother’s home.

The ex-husband is not the girl’s father, according to the chief deputy.

Wade said the case was under investigation Thursday by his office, the Department of Human Resources and the Calhoun-Cleburne Children’s Center.

A suspect could be charged with sexual abuse of a child less than 12, a felony, according to the report.
