Re “Bentley picks up $50K from Cullman businessman” (News article, June 24):

In response to the report that Gov. Robert Bentley had accepted a $50,000 campaign contribution from a wealthy donor, I am reminded of a quote by Upton Sinclair: “It is difficult to get a man to understand something, when his salary depends on his not understanding it.”

Even when these huge contributions do not buy a specific decision now, they certainly limit a politician’s freedom to change his or her mind in the future in response to new information or changing needs.

That can lead to poor decisions and the loss of trust in our democracy, and that should concern us all.
