HOT BLAST: Were the British making fun of burning the White House?

The United States and Britain are close allies, and thankfully so. But, gosh, the British Embassy's Twitter mistake this weekend was especially awkward.

This year marks the 200th anniversary of the British's burning of the White House during the War of 1812. (The war didn't end until 1815; the White House was torched a year earlier.) On Sunday, in remembrance of that event, the British Embassy in Washington sent this tweet:

Then it sent this one:

Which led to an apology tweet:

This is a lot about nothing, of course. But it does show how in the use of social media -- where nuance is hard to judge -- funny little things can go a long way in the wrong direction.
