Since this is Labor Day, today seems the perfect time to offer a fuller examination of labor unions' place in the U.S. workforce.

In a word: small.

The Star's editorial board wrote about the Labor Day holiday, unions and the Alabama economy on Saturday. Today, the data-research site Vox.com has published a good collection of charts that put American unions in proper perspective.

Without stealing Vox's thunder, suffice it to say that labor unions in the United States aren't the behemoths they were in previous generations. That's not breaking news, obviously, but Vox's report helps us understand what's going on.
