Speak Out ... Children's Theater tops

Re "JSU Children's Theater brings books to life" (News article, June 27): The Jacksonville State University Children's Theatre was at the Oxford Public Library on June 26. The play was under the direction of Eric Traynor. Traynor, along with Heather Norton, Katie Shell, Jason Bozeman and Scott Van Patten, performed "Little Red Riding Hood" and adapted it to fit our summer reading theme, "Catch the Reading Bug." Their performance was outstanding! Of the 165 or so who attended, everyone was clapping and singing along. It was absolutely wonderful. In my many years with the library, this program is on the top of the list of all acts we've had here. It was great for our children to be exposed to the arts. We have already expressed the desire for them to come back next year. From all of us at the Oxford Public Library, we give a thumbs-up to these folks. We recommend anyone and everyone to attend their plays. Alayne W. Livingston, director Badgett's courageRe "Fund set up for Paralympian's family" (Sports article, July 13): Almost hidden on the second page of The Star's sports section was a headline that stretched across six columns. The three inches of copy told of the need for funds to assist the family of Mallerie Badgett to accompany her to Beijing in September. It also told of Mallerie's struggle with diplegic cerebral palsy since birth. A wheelchair competitor, Mallerie qualified recently in the 100- and 200-meter dashes, but still will require two weeks of training at the pre-Olympic venue before departure to Beijing. Mallerie is a graduate of Oxford High School, where she played bells on the sideline with the band during football season, and is attending UAB on scholarships. Volumes could be written about the courage and determination of this young woman and the support received from her family. Contributions can be made at Compass Bank or to 2306 Fitzgerald Road, Oxford, AL, 36203. For more information, call Randall Badgett at (256) 473-2887 or (256) 835-5849. Jim Haynes Animal mistreatmentThis is for the people who threw a young dog recently from the back seat of their car. It was July 11, at about 6:15 p.m., at the intersection of Whites Gap Road and Whites Gap Road SE. In my shock and horror, I did not get their tag number. I can only hope one of the other cars got it. What these people did is abuse and it is illegal. The poor fellow was so scared that he would not come to me. I would have tried to find a home for him. He was so skinny he looked like he had not been fed in weeks. May we all hope that these people don't get tired of their children, stop feeding them and discard them at an intersection in broad daylight. T.L. Worthy |
