Speak Out ... Shelby's response
|
I take the time to sign petitions on all issues I am concerned about, and these are forwarded to our senators and representatives. I usually receive replies from their offices, and I just received one on global warming from Sen. Richard Shelby's office. The reason I am commenting on this reply is because of Shelby's reason for not taking a more aggressive stand against global warming — all of the information isn't in yet and Shelby doesn't want to do anything that might adversely affect our economy (that would be Big Oil). But the really strange thing the letter says is that Shelby wasn't persuaded that global warming, or climate change as the letter called it, was a cyclical phenomenon of our weather or caused by man-made pollutants. I don't claim to be as intelligent as our representatives in Congress believe they are; I'm just a common man with common sense. But when I apply common sense to that statement, the first thing I question is, I can't think of one good benefit caused by putting pollutants into our atmosphere. Can you? So why don't we try reducing these pollutants for a while and see what happens? If nothing good happens, we can always go back to doing what we know is wrong. It's also time to get rid of not only the pollutants but the people who can't see that getting rid of them would be a step in the right direction. Donald Landers Racing at RichmondI have read so much in the newspapers and on the Internet and listened to radio personalities about the NASCAR wreck between Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Kyle Busch. Much has been said by "supposed" fans of Dale Jr., with most of the comments saying that he wimped out or was a crybaby after the race. Anybody ever hear of disappointment? To all who criticize, remember the pressure that the press and his fans place on Earnhardt Jr. each race weekend. When he left Dale Earnhardt Interprises for Hendrick Motorsports, everyone expected him to win every race. This is totally unrealistic. Right now, Dale Jr. is the most consistent driver for car owner Rick Hendrick and is sitting third in points standings. Dale Jr. is attempting to prove that he is a champion by racing for a championship. By being in the top 10 each week, he proves that he is competitive and a contender. The Richmond race was disappointing to him because he was racing so hard and knew that the fans were behind him. When he got wrecked with only two laps remaining, he knew his top two or three finish was over. The true Junior Nation is behind him whether he wins no races or 36 races. Junior is my driver just like the Alabama Crimson Tide is my football team. I am with them when they win and support them when they lose. Grow up writers, broadcasters and fans. Those wins are going to come. Sandy Forbus |
