Speak Out ... Asbestos measure a winner

By our readers
02-24-2006

Asbestos lawsuits are clogging our courts and denying asbestos victims the benefits they need and deserve.

Recently, reform of the asbestos lawsuit system has been debated in the U.S. Senate, and I want to commend our two senators, Richard Shelby and Jeff Sessions, for their strong support of this reform measure.

The proposal was derailed by one vote in the Senate on a procedural move that was irrelevant to the issue at hand. Hopefully, this measure can be reconsidered in the coming days by the Senate so that asbestos victims have a fair and equitable process for getting help.

Again, Sens. Shelby and Sessions deserve strong support and recognition for their actions.

Where’s Teddy?

The national media and liberal politicians have questioned (giddily) why Vice President Cheney has been so quiet concerning his recent accident. On the questioning side, deafeningly quiet has been Sen. Kennedy. How uncharacteristic of Teddy as of late.

Nagin an embarrassment

Re “Chocolate, vanilla both good” (Feb. 6 Speak Out):

Born and raised in Anniston and now living in Baton Rouge, La., I would like to commend the writer on a highly agreed upon and appreciated opinion. Our people have suffered greatly — more than I ever care to witness, for the rest of my life. I thought the rest of the world had forgotten, but it’s good to know you have not.

We have lost our family members, our pets, our homes, our jobs. We have lost precious family photographs and all the clothing we own. Many have nothing. Nothing! We live in FEMA trailers, shelters and hotels all across the United States. We are blackand white. Mother Nature does not pick colors.

We need government leaders to assure us that we will prevail and overcome this tragedy, not portray racism and bigotry, as we have seen New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin do. He is an embarrassment to our state.

I can assure you that New Orleans, in time, will rebuild and once again become “The Big Easy” that we all know and love.
