Speak Out … Is there a litter law?

By our readers
02-08-2006

Now that I’m retired, I have the time to ride around and enjoy Alabama the Beautiful. Well, I’m shocked to see that my county, Calhoun, doesn’t seem to know where to put trash — except on the side of the roads!

When I was a teen, I threw out my trash on the side of the road, and, just my luck, a state policeman stopped me. He informed me that I had two choices: (1) Pay a litter fine (which I couldn’t because I was always broke), or (2) police one mile of highway (which I did).

He gave me a stick and a bag to pick up trash and waited with lights on until I came back. Wouldn’t you know that everybody I knew had to be on that street at that time? The nice policeman taught me that trash has its place — not on our roads.

I’ve asked friends about this, but everyone seems to think that inmates clean this up. Hello! Other counties don’t seem to have this problem. Are we that lazy?

Bush is no Christian

On Jan.22, Philip Rowe wrote that Bush was a Christian. Mr. Rowe, actions speak louder then words. The meaning of Christianity is to follow the teachings of Jesus Christ or manifest the qualities of Jesus Christ, something Bush has not done.

Eighty percent of Christ’s gospel was about taking care of the less fortunate, the underprivileged, the “least of these,” as Christ said. Bush has given the richest Americans tax breaks and is paying for them by cutting Medicaid and Medicare for the poor and elderly.

Bush has put our nation in deep debt. The Bible is very clear about being in debt (Romans 13:8 and Proverbs 22:7). The price for indebtedness is great. The Bible tells us that the children of Israel lost much of their land and possessions because of debt; some even had to sell their children into slavery to pay off their debt (Nehemiah 5:3-5). According to the Bible, Bush is not a Christian.
