Speak Out ... On obeying laws

In our opinion
01-21-2004

Re Friday’s Anniston Star news article, “Muslims upset about removing scarves to get Alabama licenses”:

I lived in Saudi Arabia for 16 years and traveled through many of the Islamic countries in the Middle East. If memory serves me correctly, Muslim customs forbid women from driving at all. I have no problems with someone coming to our country and enjoying the freedoms we offer here. However, if you live here and wish to be a part of the Muslim religion, you should abide by federal and state laws. After all, if we were in Saudi Arabia or any other Muslim country, I can assure you that the government there would enforce their laws to the fullest.

So, if you want to drive here, then abide by the laws . . . the picture is for your protection as well as law enforcement.

Bring on the lottery

Re Friday’s editorial, “What our children don’t have on their desks”:

I resent the editorial writer saying Alabamians are cheap. I don’t consider myself as being cheap. I want to help our teachers and children. I just don’t want to pay higher taxes.

In any of the states surrounding Alabama, I’m sure there are schools with a computer at each and every desk. You know why a computer is at each and every desk — the lottery. Help support our teachers and students by bringing the lottery to Alabama.
