Speak Out ... On gender and a comment

By our readers
01-13-2003

I was really blown away by Jesse Jackson Jr.’s comment.

He compared Trent Lott to Monica Lewinsky thereby capturing in that succinct and revelatory parallel the true “nature” of party politics.

A real “point of light.” Of course, we ladies have known for centuries what Mr. Jackson is just discovering in his youth.

You can put it in a white gown, march it down the aisle, teach it holy vows, put rings on it, tack on a dowry...

You can call it politics, big business, a “holy” war, you can call it a marriage if you want ...

But however you dress it up, it’s still the oldest profession in the world.

So, fellas, next time you go to a political party meeting, don’t forget your lipstick and perfume.

And, ah, wear something nice.

Need we remind Mr. Jackson that he is not immune either? Or shall we let him find out for himself?

Constitution

If we would read the U.S Constitution “literally” we would understand our guaranteed right of prayer and posting the Ten Commandments anywhere we please.

For proof we need to go back to the year 1737 when Benjamin Franklin called on the framers to pray for guidance. He said, “I have lived a long time and the longer I live the more convincing proof I have of the truth that God governs the affairs of man.” And, if a sparrow cannot fall to the ground without His notice, is it probable that an empire can rise without His aid? We have been assured in the Sacred Writing that except the Lord build the house, they labor in vain, and I firmly believe that.

Unless we heed those words we will lose those freedoms the Constitution gave us. Our American dream will crumble even more. With lost freedoms will come other losses, democracy destroyed, rights suppressed, and liberties abolished. These precious ideals shaped by the Constitution and Christian religion will be lost in a storm of totalitarianism unless we recapture the original meaning of the Constitution.

Religion and morality are the pillars of society which should make us want to practice those ideals in restoring America back to her greatness. If there is hope, it depends on whether Christians will revamp their morality. If not, then the American dream will become a nightmare that will bring America under hard times she has never known.

Op-Ed come back

Recently, I read
an Op-Ed by Nathan Solheim concerning celebrities who are opposed to a war in Iraq.

Solheim suggested that celebrities should keep their opinions to themselves when it comes to a war in Iraq. Most of these celebrities are American citizens and, as such, should be able to express their opinions just like the rest of us.

I oppose going to war with Iraq. People like me who are opposed to this war are labeled un-American or unpatriotic by the Bush Administration and their lackeys; lackeys who, unfortunately, include our representatives in the U.S. House and Senate.

Once you take away their fame and money, celebrities are not unlike the rest of us. And one of the ways they are like everyone else is that they should enjoy the same rights as the rest of us.
