Speak Out ... On a trip to the landfill

By our readers
08-16-2002

I happen to be one of the thousands of citizens who took advantage of the free day at the Calhoun County Landfill recently. In fact, it took me three trips to clean out my old barn, something I probably should have done years ago. I just want to say how much I appreciate my commissioner, Eli Henderson, and the other commissioners for extending the free days from once a year to four times a year.

Speaking of the commission, thanks for the protective hoods soon to be issued in our Wellborn community. I never thought duct tape and plastic would protect anyone. Thanks for standing firm, guys. And for those of you who have not seen the new paint job on our county courthouse, please take a look. Our courthouse looks better today than it has in years. This commission, I think, has done an outstanding job.

Finally, I think Lea Fite and Randy Wood will make us two really good legislators.

Lottery

If the lottery wins that’ll just be the beginning. Casinos will follow, and all other forms of gambling will be next. The gambling interests will get it all if we don’t stand up to them. They have tipped their hand. They plan to take over our state.

We have a beautiful state. I believe God gave us the auto plant jobs (don’t forget Gov. Fob James started all that) because we defeated the lottery. He has blessed us. We are being told the lottery will solve all our problems. Folks, that’ll just be the beginning of our problems. Vote no on the lottery. Vote for Bob Riley for governor.

Chemical weapons

Have you thought about speeding up the destruction of your chemical weapons stockpile using some of the alternative, neutralization technologies that have been developed? In combination with what you have right now, you might find that it is both quicker and safer to take advantage of the advances that have been made in destroying chemical weapons.

Just something you may want to consider, especially given the history of problems we have experienced in Utah.

Justice

I agree with the gentleman who wrote in concerning justice priorities. A lot of time and money is wasted by our government on trivial things.

God has been handling moral issues long before we were born. Some of them are guilty of their own escapades, they just didn’t get caught. The government should have better things to do with its time and our money — the safety of our country, for one thing, so that we don’t have another Sept. 11th.

That money spent on nude priorities could have been put into the Social Security system that we always hear is having a problem. We are always hearing talk of the deficit, yet the government has money to waste. I know of government waste on my job. What happened to “for the people and by the people”?

Maybe we need to vote on the priorities of our government.

A senior concern

As I see it, George W. Bush doesn’t have much to brag about.

As a senior citizen, I expected the Republicans to support the cheapest prescription drug bill they could get by with. They have to leave room to help the rich.

I believe next year we will see the Republicans wanting to cut back on many programs, to make up for the rich man’s tax cut. They will blame it on the terrorists.

Mr. Bush likes to talk hawkish to hawkish voters. It seems George W. Bush is much more hawkish now than he was during the Vietnam War, when he joined the National Guard to keep from going to Vietnam.

As a World War II veteran, I earned the right to express my opinion about any leader.

Guess what, I liked Papa Bush better than this one.
