Speak Out ... On the McClellan property

By our readers
07-30-2002

JPA needs to re-evaluate their policies regarding low cost leases, especially since Sept. 11. Any organization that deals with Homeland Security should have priority for land at McClellan. I fully understand JPA’s wishes to attract businesses that will bring in capital. But since Sept. 11, Homeland Security takes number one priority.

Regardless of what locates at McClellan, I’m sure they will be able to keep the grass cut, which appears to be too much for the city of Anniston to handle.

Corporate scandal

Investor confidence has been battered by the recent CEO scandals of manipulating accounting reports and insider trading. Immediate arrests and convictions are needed. Writing new laws and increasing jail time are just window dressings.

The current laws should be enforced with CEO Ken Lay of Enron behind bars in a blue collar prison cell.

Volcano plan

For the 20 years in which I was in the Army we were taught how to handle and use some of our chemical weapons. For years now I have read and heard all the rhetoric about disposing of these weapons.

All this time I have not heard anything about how I think we could dispose of these weapons without causing all the fuss. Just recently I saw this volcano on a deserted island which erupts practically on a daily basis. There are others which pour out a molten lava on a continuous basis. All this lava is much hotter than any incinerator and it’s free for the taking.

The other day I saw on television a report on a test run of the incinerator. They did this test simply by dropping a shell into the incinerator. I am sure that all the monitoring instruments were in place all around this area.

For many years now I have written letters and talked to anyone who would listen to me about my idea about getting rid of these chemical weapons. Why not just gather them up and air drop, or shoot, them into open, active volcanoes?

They tested this multimillion dollar incinerator by simply dropping a shell into it. Why can’t they simply drop a few of these shells into a volcano and monitor the results? I am sure that the molten lava of the volcano will burn up and seal up all the residue of these chemical weapons. Why not try it on atomic residue too?

I am a person who does not give up on my ideas until someone who knows for sure says it won’t work and why.

Presidential visit

It was nice of the President to visit Alabama, but it was mostly for politics.

What did it cost the taxpayers to fly him here and back to Washington and pay all the extra security guards while he was here?

Education governor?

What has Gov. Siegelman done for education? All we’ve heard in the last four years is proration, proration, proration. Now he wants to bring in the lottery. We’ve told him we don’t want it.

But he insists on turning our state over to the gambling interests. Let’s say no again. Vote no to the lottery. Vote Bob Riley for governor.
