Speak Out

Speak Out … On taxes and homerule

By our readers
07-15-2002

I got a chuckle out of Johnnie Alexander’s “Thanks for Your Vote and Support” ad in The Anniston Star. Johnnie is my neighbor and lives up the street. In his ad he claims 68 percent of the residents in District 3 voted for a change. The truth is the incumbent, Eli Henderson, received 61 percent of the votes and his opponent, Mr. Garner, received 39 percent. Sixty-eight percent does not fit. Maybe Mr. Alexander needs to brush up on his math!

Another chuckle arises when I see his placards stating “No Home Rule” and “No New Taxes.” This is the same politician that called a local radio talk show to support Oxford in the annexation election. He claimed that Oxford had already helped him by installing a fire plug near his home resulting in a new 50 percent rate reduction on his homeowners insurance. What Mr. Alexander didn’t say or doesn’t know is that Mr. Henderson secured the grant to install the new water line. The city of Anniston Water Works installed the line and his neighbors paid approximately $200 per family to secure the fire hydrant. Oxford? I think not.

Thank Mr. Henderson and your neighbors for the fire plug.

Johnnie worked hard to get annexed into Oxford which has home rule, yet he campaigned against it for his own election. What do you stand for, Johnnie?

As for “No New Taxes,” the law does not permit county commissions without home rule to vote in taxes. Oxford has that authority. Confused again? Johnnie wants in Oxford but campaigned for “No New Tax” and “No Home Rule.”

Check Mr. Webster’s definition of a politician and a statesman and see where each candidate falls.
Is this the guy you want to represent District 3? I think not! Nuff said.

Ignorance

The letter from a reader talking about people whining about the incinerator and why don’t they move is the most ignorant statement I have heard in a long time. Maybe she would like to buy all this choice property around the incinerator. I myself am not whining and am not scared of it. But for the ones who are, they are stuck where they are unless some “fool” buys their property. Not everyone is so rich they can abandon their hard earned home and start over somewhere else. So, reader, wise up before you write another inane statement.

Wellborn

To anyone who has lived in Wellborn and the surrounding area for any length of time has to know that we the people of Calhoun County should never say we’ve had E-Nuff of a good thing like Eli Henderson. I am not only speaking of Commissioner Eli Henderson but the man Eli, the same as you and me. He has improved the Wellborn community in ways that without him we couldn’t have accomplished. To me, one of the biggest things about this man is his heart. He is making a better place for our children

I am sure there will be no doubt that I am a true Eli supporter. Eli, I can only hope and pray you will continue to do your thing, improving our community for the future of our children.
