Speak Out ... On homeland security and the Depot

By our readers
11-12-2001

Homeland Security, where are you?

We have our own ever-present terror. How many leaks will prove to be ONE too many?

The Anniston Chemical Activity Group has released a half-dozen statements over the past weeks aimed at reassuring readers that "leaking rockets/cylinders pose no hazard." They go on to report "all leakers are placed in over-pack containers and are sealed." My question is: Why not seal ALL of them BEFORE they leak and be done with it?

I believe we've been pressing our luck and an unimaginable catastrophe is possible. Whatever happened to "an ounce of prevention, etc., etc."?

America is sending humanitarian aid to Afghans while ignoring the life-threatening danger on our city's doorstep. A public outcry is needed. It doesn't take a genius to figure out the consequences of "Oops!"

Lobster thanks

Grace Episcopal Church and Habitat for Humanity of Calhoun County wish to express our thanks to the people of Calhoun County.

For five years you have supported Lobsterfest, which is a fundraiser for Habitat. We had a very successful Lobsterfest this year where we raised over $12,000 for Habitat and sold 1,500 lobsters. Besides enjoying lobsters, there was musical entertainment, games for children, hot dogs and arts and crafts. It was a wonderful and fun day for everyone with the end result being a successful day for Habitat.

Because of recent events in our country, we were unsure of how the public would respond, but we had our second largest year in spite of the national issues. The success each year is due to our Calhoun County community.

We would like to also thank those businesses that continue to support us year after year so generously: Top O the River, Red Lobster, Mark's Fresh Market, Superior Gas, Dean's Sausage, Food World/Food Max, Winn Dixie, Superior Nissan, and Brown/Kughn.

Katherine Smith, Lobsterfest Chairman and Habitat Board Member

Not-so-collateral damage

The worst thing about the "accidental" Red Cross warehouse bombing in Kabul, is that it was accidental. Since the Taliban kicked out all foreign aid workers such facilities are in the hands of barbaric thugs. That warehouse no longer serves the innocent. It supports tyranny. It must be destroyed, not protected.
