ARNOLD

ANNISTON — Funeral services for Mr. Ronald "Ronnie" Arnold, 53, will be 2 p.m., Tuesday, August 5, 2008, at Gray Brown-Service Mortuary with The Rev. Joe McKleroy officiating. Burial will follow at Macedonia Baptist Church Cemetery in Ragland. The family will receive friends this evening from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Mr. Arnold died Sunday at UAB.

Survivors include his daughter, Kelly A. Arenth and husband, Lawrence of Anniston; a step-daughter, Dianna Eady; three step-sons, Jason Eady, Willard Haynes, and Donald Haynes; three grandchildren, Lawrence Arenth, IV, Kirstin Arenth, and Monica Arenth; his mother, Marie Arnold; one sister, Mary Mitchell and husband Kenneth; three brothers, Andrew W. Arnold, Jr., Brinson Arnold, and Donald Arnold; and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Arnold is preceded in death by his father, Andrew W. Arnold, Sr.; two brothers, Carey Arnold and Roger Dale Arnold; and an aunt, Lucille A. Roberts.

Pallbearers will be Jason Eady, Tommy Eady, Donald Haynes, Lawrence Arenth, Glenn Eady, and Brian Arnold. Mr. Arnold was a native and life long resident of Calhoun County. Gray Brown-Service Mortuary in charge of arrangements. (256) 236-3441

SMITH

GADSDEN — Graveside services will be at for Charles Perry Smith, 96, at 11 a.m. Tuesday, August 5, 2008, at Crestwood Cemetery in Gadsden with Pastor Rodney Ledbetter and Seth Coleman officiating. Mr. Smith passed away on Saturday, August 2, 2008, at his residence in Calhoun County. Mr. Smith was a native of Gadsden he was the seventh child; of Charles Barron Dekalb Smith and Lenora Marlow Smith. He graduated from Gadsden High School and attended Alabama Trade School, and was an active member of East Gadsden Baptist Church. Mr. Smith spent most of his working life in Columbia, Tenn, where he was transferred by Monsanto Chemical in 1947. He was very active in First Baptist Church Columbia. He served variously as deacon, Sunday School Superintendent and building Committee Chairman. He also, served as Tennessee State Chaplain of the Scottish Rites order of the Masons.

He retired to Alabama in 1980, where he was an active member and deacon, of New Hopewell Baptist Church in Calhoun County. After Mr. Smith's retirement, he began painting in oils as a hobby. His subjects were locations in the northeast area of Alabama, Middle Tennessee and scenes from his son's farm in East Tennessee. His paintings were enjoyed only by family and friends until 1998, when Bobby Welch arranged a showing of his work at the Gadsden Center Of Cultural Arts. The featured painting was Smith's rendering of Memorial Bridge across the Coosa in Gadsden, which was painted when he was 83 years of age. Later, he painted the bridge under construction as he remembered it from the time long ago when he spent summer days watching it being built.

He is survived by his wife, Rachel Bishop Coleman Smith; daughter, Sally Smith Shamblin; sons; Barry (Linda) Smith of Kingsport, Tenn; Butch (Linda) Coleman of Pass Christina, Miss; Benny (Donna) Coleman, Calhoun County; grandchildren; Ken (Jennifer) Smith, New Philadelphia, Ohio; Kevin (Kandy)Smith of Tigard, Ore; Stacy Coleman, Brandon Coleman, John (Tina) Coleman of Hokes Bluff; Seth (Beth) Coleman of Hartselle, Ala; Rachel (Danny) Coleman Haas, of Calhoun County; 13 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his ten brothers and sisters, his first wife, Lois Coleman Smith, and his daughter, Catherine Elizabeth Smith.

Active Pallbearers will be his sons and grandsons. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Olajide Akinsanya of Gadsden, and Staff members of New Beacon Hospice of Anniston.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to New Beacon Hospice, Anniston.
