Grace Elizabeth Burns, Alexandria ALEXANDRIA — Graveside service for Ms. Grace Elizabeth Burns, 77, of Alexandria will be 2 p.m. today, July 15, 2008, at Mt. Zion Baptist Church Cemetery with The Rev. Kenneth Phillips officiating. Chapel Hill Funeral Home will be in charge of service. Ms. Burns is survived by her sister, Nan Phillips, of Alexandria; brother, Grady Burns and wife, Bobbie, of Alexandria; sister-in-law, Joyce Burns, of Anniston; brother-in-law, Robert Wade, of Anniston. Pallbearers will be David Rexrode, Tyler Rexrode, Randy Burns, David Shirley, Scotty Diggs and Phillip Whiteside. Ms. Burns was a native of Calhoun County and resident of Alexandria. She retired from Anniston Laundry and Dry Cleaners. She was preceded in death by her parents, Bert and Maude Elizabeth Burns; three sisters, Myrtle Burns, Edna Wade and Johnnie Whiteside; one brother, Billy Burns. Burial to follow at Pine Hill Memorial Park. CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. — Lt. Col. (Ret) John Wesley Hawbaker, 66, formerly of Anniston, passed away Sunday, July 13, 2008, at his home. He was born July 22, 1941 in Paw Paw, Illinois to the late John M. and Olive A. Hawbaker. He was a Vietnam War veteran and was retired from the United States Army after 20 years of service. Lt. Col. Hawbaker was a member of the 82nd Airborne and was an Army Ranger. During his career, he received numerous commendations and medals including the Bronze Star. He was a member of St. Mark United Methodist Church in Anniston, the Boys and Girls Club of Calhoun County, Alabama to which he had formerly served as the clubís president. He was a lifelong fan of the Brooklyn & L.A. Dodgers. He is survived by his children, John Edward Hawbaker and his wife, Genia, of Chattanooga, Joel Hawbaker and his wife, April, of Anniston, Julie Hawbaker, of Chattanooga; grandchildren, Bailey, Ella, Caroline and Olivia; former wife, Joan Ashley, of Chattanooga; brother, Joe Hawbaker; nephews, Kevin and Karl Hawbaker and their families, all of Paw Paw, Illinois. He was a loving, devoted father and grandfather and will be missed by all of his family and friends. A graveside service will be at Wednesday at 11 (EST) a.m. at Chattanooga National Cemetery with full military honors. There will be no visitation at the funeral home. A celebration of his life will be at 3 p.m. (CST) Sunday, July 20, 2008 at St. Mark United Methodist Church in Anniston. She was a member of Hillcrest Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Herring, parents, Andrew (Mack) and Myra Sims; sister, Lorene Morrow. Lynn was loved and adored by all of her family and friends. She had a gift of making everyone feel special. She will be missed very much. Owen, of Heflin; a son, Daniel Owen, of Heflin; a daughter, Audrey Leigh Owen, of Heflin; one grandchild, Jackson Daniel Owen; several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Owen was a native of Calhoun County and resident of Cleburne County for most of her life. She was a member of Harmony Grove Baptist Church for more than 25 years.
