BAKER

GADSDEN — Mrs. Marjorie Ealon Baker, 78, passed away Thursday, April 17, 2008. She was born September 29, 1929 in the Corinth Community area of north Randolph County. After graduating from Randolph County High School, she went to work in Roanoke at the Goodall Plant. She married Charles E. Baker November 14, 1948 and lived for a while in Roanoke, then later moved to Gadsden in 1963. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church for a number of years and most recently of First Baptist Church, Hokes Bluff, where she was a member of the Fidelis Sunday School Class. Mrs. Baker was preceded in death by her parents, Humphrey Davis Braden and Verta Clara Williams Braden; and two sons, Arthur Davis Baker and Ronald Alan Baker. She is survived by her husband, Charles E. Baker and two sons, Barry Kenneth (Carolyn) Baker and Charles Jeffery (Mu-Yi) Baker; three sisters, Jerusha Braden, Mary Braden, and Clara Braden Dobson; one brother, Rudolph Lee (Patsy) Braden; three grandchildren, Alene Zambrano, Kristi Lee and Brian Baker; five great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews. Collier-Butler Funeral Home will be in charge and the family will receive friends this evening from 6-8 at the funeral home. Funeral services will be conducted in the Collier-Butler Funeral Chapel at 1 p.m. Sunday, April 20, 2008, with Dr. Cecil O. Brown and The Rev. Eric House officiating. Burial will follow at the Corinth Baptist Church Cemetery in North Randolph County.

Pallbearers will be Max Bobo, Harry Cothran, DeWitt Johnson, Gene Gossett, Gary Bolton, and Jim Gidley. The family wishes to thank Dr. Parmar and his staff; Dr. Sanders and the nursing staff of 7th floor South, Gadsden Regional Medical Center, for all their loving care in making Marjorie as comfortable as possible at any time during her 3 1/2 year fight with cancer.

BAKER

OXFORD — Funeral services for Mrs. Kathryn Brown Baker, 71, of Oxford will be at noon today, April 19, 2008, at Miller Funeral Home & Crematory with The Rev. Gary Rivers and The Rev. Theron Williams officiating. The family will receive friends today from 10 a.m. until 12 p.m. at the funeral home. The burial will be at Randolph Memory Gardens at 2:30 p.m. Mrs. Baker passed away Friday at her residence in Oxford. Mrs. Baker is survived by her husband of 49 years, Bruce Lynwood Baker, of Oxford; her son, Gregory Bruce Baker and his wife, Joan, of Birmingham; her daughter, Ginger Lee Giles and husband, Kent, of Marietta, Ga.; grandchildren, Joshua, Heather and Bryant Giles, of Marietta, Ga.; brothers, Winford Brown (Annette), of North Augusta, S.C., Hoyt Brown (Peggy), of Oxford and Wayne Brown (Betty), of Roanoke; sisters, Gertrude "Cookie" Westfall (Rodney), of Heflin and Ludine Williams (Faye) of Wedowee; and a number of beloved nieces and nephews. Mrs. Baker is a native of the Big Springs Community in Randolph County and a 1955 graduate of Handley High School. She was a member of Meadowbrook Baptist Church in Oxford. Mrs. Baker was preceded in death by her parents, Albert and Bessie Brown; brothers, Curtis, Garfield, Jessie and Hoke; and sisters, Vecie Causey and Letha Mae Jacks.

HILL

OHATCHEE — Funeral services for Mattie Lee Hill, 85, will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 20, 2008, at Boiling Springs Baptist Church with the Rev. Tommy Hayes officiating. Burial will follow at Vinson Cemetery. Mrs. Hill will lie in state one hour prior to services at the church. The family will receive friends this evening from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home. Mrs. Hill passed away Thursday at Gadsden Regional Medical Center.

Survivors include her son, Winford Hill and wife, Martha, of Ohatchee; two grandchildren, Sharla Beth Hill and Marcus Brady Hill, both of Ohatchee; three sisters, Nellie Sexton, of Jacksonville, Sara Stone and Margie Nelson, both of Richmond, Va.; several nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers will be Tommy Hill, Jimmy Darrell Hill, Jimmy Dean Hill, Danny Hill, Christopher Hagler and Truman Pate. Mrs. Hill was a lifelong native of Calhoun County. She was a Calhoun County School bus driver at Ohatchee for 22 years and was a cashier at McCord's Grocery for 8 years. Mrs. Hill was a member of Boiling Springs Baptist Church for more than 45 years, where she taught the Junior Sunday School class. SPURLING

TALLADEGA — Mrs. Betty Ruth Spurling, 74, died Thursday, April 17, 2008 in Anniston. She was a native of Talladega but, lived most of her life in Talladega. Mrs. Spurling retired from Crown Textile and was a member of First Brecon Baptist Church.

Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Phyllis and Harmon Cobb, of Anniston; son and daughter-in-law, William and Sandra Spurling, of Talladega; sister, Hazel Camp, of Randolph; four grandchildren, Gretchen Weathington, Scotty Spurling, Harmon Cobb II and Eston Cobb and one great- granddaughter, Madeline Weathington. She was preceded in death by her husband, Alex I. Spurling and a daughter, Janice Spurling. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. today at Usrey Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Paul Thompson officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery with Usrey Brown-Service Funeral Home in charge.

Pallbearers will be Scott Spurling, Harmon Cobb II, Eston Cobb, Michael Weathington, Herbert Ford and Mark Ford.

FORT PAYNE — Graveside memorial services for Thomas L. Williams, 84, will be at the Fisher Cemetery located at Fisher Crossroads just off Desoto Parkway, on Monday, April 21, 2008 at 11 am. Minister Clint Mahoney of Birmingham will be officiating and K.L. Brown Funeral Home and Cremation Center in charge of the arrangements. Mr. Thomas L. Survivors include his wife of over 63 years, Sophia Marie Williams; three children, Thomas Earl Williams and his wife Nancy, of Lacey's Spring, Gary Lee Williams, of Birmingham and Susan Elaine Cascio and her husband Nick, of Shthe Reveport, La.; four siblings, Willie Mae McGraw, of Winter Park, Fla., James Calvin Williams, of Milledgeville, Ga., Jimmy Arves Williams, of Ft. Payne and Johnny Ballard Williams, of Chipley, Fla.; two grandchildren, Thomas Earl Williams Jr., of Birmingham and Emily Susanne Alley, of Shthe Reveport, La., and countless nieces and nephews. Mr. Williams was born September 9, 1923 in Carbon Hill to John Thomas Williams, of Houston, and Lorena Ardella Belcher Williams, of Mt. Olive. He served in the U.S. Navy for 26 1/2 years from 1940 to 1967 and was proud veteran of World War II. He was a Fireman and Fire inspector for the City of Miami, Fla., Fire Department for 24 years, from 1948 to 1972 and was ordained in 1972 by the World Wide Church of God.
