BACKUS

JACKSONVILLE — Funeral services for Mr. Gordon "Lee" Backus, 82, will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Gray Brown Service Chapel with the Rev. Robert Smith Jr. officiating. Burial will follow at Edgemont Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:30 until 8 tonight at Gray Brown Service. Mr. Backus passed away Monday in Jacksonville.

Survivors include his sons, Bill Backus, of Jacksonville, Bob Backus and wife, JoAnn, of Jacksonville, Mike Backus and wife, Cindy, of Huntsville; grandchildren, Katherine Conn and husband, Vince, Spence Backus, Scott Backus, and Missy Backus; sisters, Lynn Backus Daugherty, of Glencoe and Mary Gladys Backus Hight, of Oxford; and several nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers will be Johnny Stinson, Chip Stinson, Billy Daugherty, Scott Backus, Spencer Backus, and Vince Conn. Mr. Backus was a native and lifelong resident of Calhoun County and a member of Weaver 1st United Methodist Church. He served in the Army during World War II. Mr. Backus was the owner and operator of Lee's Drive Inn in Anniston during the 40s, 50s, and 60s. He also operated several other restaurants until 2006. Mr. Backus is preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Joyce Cole Backus; two sisters, Flora Belle Fleming, and Dessie Mae Burdette; one brother, Roscoe Backus and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. H.E. Backus.

OXFORD — Graveside services for Ms. Gordie Hatton Brown, 91, will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 16, 2008, at Forestlawn Gardens. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 11 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. at Miller Funeral Home & Crematory. Ms. Brown died Sunday at Golden Living Center in Oxford. Ms. Brown is survived by one grandson, Barry Hatton, of Panama City Beach, Fla.; sister, Billie Character, of Oxford; brother, Ray Turner, of Anniston; three great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by husband Carl Brown; son, Coy Hatton; parents, Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Turner; sisters, Edna Kelley, Totsy Adams, Jewell Cox; and brothers, Ralph Turner and Tonnie Turner.

CHEATWOOD

OXFORD — Funeral services for Margaret Cheatwood, 77, will be at 2 p.m. today, April 15, 2008, in the chapel of Miller Funeral Home & Crematory with the Rev. Ronnie Cheatwood and The Rev. Dewayne Borders officiating. Burial will follow in the Forestlawn Gardens. The family will receive friends today from 12 until 2 p.m. at the funeral home. Mrs. Cheatwood died on Sunday at Long Term Care Hospital of Anniston.

Survivors include her children, Linda Weems and her husband, Paul, of Anniston, Nancy Haynes and her husband, Randy, of Anniston, Tommy Cheatwood and his wife, Teena, of Oxford and Ronnie Cheatwood and his wife, Sandra, of Marietta, Ga.; brothers, Jack Lumpkin, of Anniston and Charles Lumpkin, of Heflin; grandchildren, Terry Weems, Amanda Swenson, Carrie Brown, Ryan Haynes, Russ Haynes, Tim Cheatwood, Tracy Steward, Kelsey Cheatwood, Kortney Cheatwood, Dewayne Cheatwood, Jacky Cheatwood and Kim Cheatwood Jackson; great-grandchildren, Alex Swenson, Jacob Swenson, Micah Swenson, Hunter Haynes, Dawson Brown, Taylor Brown, Houston Walker and Gabriel Steward.

Pallbearers will be Terry Weems, Tim Cheatwood, Russ Haynes, Ryan Haynes, Wayne Sims and Jason Brown. Honorary pallbearers will be members of Naomi Sunday School Class. Mrs. Cheatwood was a life long resident of Calhoun County. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church. She was a devoted mother and grandmother. RADCLIFF, Ky. — Jan Elizabeth Cooper, 62, died Saturday, April 12, 2008, at Hardin Memorial Hospital in Elizabethtown, Ky. She was a member of Mill Creek Baptist Church and a life member of the Military Order of Purple Heart Auxiliary. She retired from civil service work at Fort Knox as secretary for the Adjutant General. She was preceded in death by her father and mother, Charles W. Brown and Julia Mae Waldrep; two brothers, Charles L. Brown and Clarence L. Brown; and a sister, Doris Ann Henderson.

She is survived by her husband, Benjamin Leon Cooper Sr., of Radcliff; three sons, Starling S. Ridgeway III and his wife, Jill, of Woodbridge, Va., Charles W. Ridgeway, of Bowling Green, Ky., and Benjamin L. Cooper Jr., of Radcliff; two grandchildren, Abigail and Ryan Ridgeway, both of Woodbridge, Va.; her parents, Otis and Martha Warren, of Anniston; a brother, Jack E. Reynolds of Mableton, Ga.; and five sisters, Alice F. Howell, of Douglasville, G., Jan Day of Elijay, Ga., Connie Baker, of Anniston, Fain Geist, of Alexandria City, and Christie Jones, of Jacksonville.

The funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, April 16, 2008 at Mill Creek Baptist Church in Radcliff with Dr. James Shaw officiating. Burial will be in the Kentucky Veterans Cemetery Central in Radcliff, Ky. Visitation will be this evening from 6 - 8 p.m. and on Wednesday beginning at 9 a.m. at Nelson-Edelen-Bennett Funeral Home in Radcliff. OXFORD — Shirley Jean Wilson Denson, a retired educator of Oxford High School, departed this life on April 10, 2008 at Riverview Medical Center in Gadsden. DUPREE

PIEDMONT — Mr. Ray Allen Dupree, 62, passed away at Regional Medical Center on April 13, 2008. Mr. Dupree was born on August 15, 1945 son of the late Grady and Edna Deaton Dupree, of Piedmont; two brothers, Paul Dupree and Roy Dupree; two sisters, Ms. Edith Dupree and Ms. Juanita Lewis, preceded him in death. Prior to his retirement he was employed as a truck driver.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Shirley Dupree; one son, David (Stacy) Hastert, of Piedmont; one daughter, Mrs. Tammy (Brian) Donaldson, of Piedmont; two sisters, Ms. Mary Perry and Mrs. Deborah (Mack) Logan; grandchildren, Gary Hastert, Victoria Donaldson, and Tristan Donaldson.

Funeral services for Mr. Dupree will be conducted at 7 tonight from the chapel of Folsom Funeral Home with the Rev. James Owens officiating. The family will receive friends from 5 p.m. until the service hour at the funeral home.

Mrs. Gannon passed away Sunday at Regional Medical Center.

Pallbearers will be family. Honorary pallbearers will be the Encouragers Sunday School Class. Mrs. Gannon was a native of Montgomery County and was a resident of Calhoun County for most of her life. She was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years Norman D. Gannon; her parents, Henry and Iva Della Tilton; brother, Harry Tilton; sister, Mary Foster; and grandson, Jason Todd Corona. Mrs. Gannon was a school bus driver for the Calhoun and Talladega County Board of Education for 19 years. As a follower of Jesus Christ, Carolyn was a former member of Plum Springs Baptist Church and a current member of Hill Crest Baptist Church. While at Hill Crest, she was an active member of the Encouragers Sunday School Class and the Good Timers. SAKS — Services for Elsie Marie Lent, 73, will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Anniston Memorial Funeral Home with Dr. Cecil Sewell and the Rev. Tommy Reaves officiating. Entombment will be in Maple Grove Mausoleum. The family will receive friends this evening from 5 until 7 at the funeral home. Mrs. Lent died Sunday at Golden Living Center in Oxford.

Survivors include her sisters, Dorothy Angel, of Oxford and Faye Thornton, of Pell City; her brother, Charles "Chuck" Barber and his wife, Alice, of Mobile; and several nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers will be Keith Angel, Ronald Bowman, Jimmy Barber, Wayne Barber, Michael Barber, Mark Thornton, Johnny Tolleson and Frank Angel. Mrs. Lent was a military wife and after retirement lived in Oxford. Later, she moved to Saks, where she became an avid golfer and won several championships. She was a former employee of Hudson's Dept. Store. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Saks and the Faith Sunday School Class.
