HEFLIN - Heflin police recovered more than eight pounds of marijuana and charged a North Carolina man with felony possession after a traffic stop Monday, officials said.

Heflin police Chief A. J. Benefield said  officers pulled over Steve Biko Lufuluabo, 35, for failure to stay within his lane near mile marker 199 on Interstate 20 Monday afternoon. Lufuluabo, who was headed west in a rented 2014 Ford Fusion, denied officers permission to search the car, Benefield said.  So, they contacted Oxford’s K-9 unit for assistance, he said.

The dog circled the car and alerted the officers at the trunk, giving them reasonable cause to search the vehicle, Benefield said. The officers found the marijuana in the trunk, he said.

Lufuluabo is being held in Cleburne County Jail on a $1 million bond, and was still in jail Tuesday afternoon.
