A new preliminary hearing has been set for an Anniston woman charged with murder in the shooting death of a man in May.

Pam DeAnn Smith, 46, was arrested May 26, charged with murdering Casey Lynn Payne, 39, of Anniston. Smith was released on a $50,000 bond the next day.

Payne was shot in the chest with a shotgun on May 26 at Smith’s home on the 2200 block of Parkwood Drive in Anniston, according to Anniston police. Payne did not live at the home, police have said, but Smith and Payne knew one-another.

Calhoun County District Judge Chris McIntire had set Smith’s hearing for Monday, but Smith did not have an attorney when she appeared in court. McIntyre appointed attorney Allen Meighan to represent Smith, and set Smith’s preliminary hearing for July 17 at 10 a.m.
