Missing since Mother's Day, an 80-year-old Georgia man who police believed may have been traveling near Anniston when he disappeared was found dead Tuesday in Georgia. His dog was at his side.

Jimmy Wilkerson was last seen leaving his home on Little Vine Church Road in Villa Rica, Ga., on May 11, family members told police, driving his 1982 Chevrolet S-10 truck.

Carroll County (Ga.) Sheriff’s Office Capt. Jeff Richards said Wednesday that police found Wilkerson's body alongside a logging road and power line in Douglas County, Ga., the county just northwest of the man’s home. It appeared that his truck had become stuck, Richards said, and that Wilkerson had tried to walk out of the area.

Wilkerson was traveling with his white Maltese dog, Bebe, when he disappeared. The dog was found by his owner’s side, Richards said.

“It was in need of medical treatment from what appeared to be other animal bites,” Richards said. “The dog was taken to the Douglas County Animal Shelter and the family will be making arrangements for its return after treatment.”

Wilkerson has family living in the Anniston area, and police believed he may have been on his way to visit them the day he disappeared, Richards said. Wilkerson’s mother is buried at Oak Bowery Cemetery in Ohatchee as well, he said.

Wilkerson had suffered from some memory loss in recent months, Richards told The Star in May.

There were no signs of foul play, Richards said, and Wilkerson’s remains were taken to a Georgia Bureau of Investigations crime lab for examination.
