1314 During the First War of Scottish Independence, the two-day Battle of Bannockburn, resulting in victory for the forces of Robert the Bruce over the army of King Edward II, began near Stirling.

1812 Britain, unaware that America had declared war against it five days earlier, rescinded its policy on neutral shipping, a major issue of contention between the two countries.

1972 President Nixon signed Title IX, which barred discrimination on the basis of sex for "any education program or activity receiving federal financial assistance."

1989 The Supreme Court refused to shut down the "dial-a-porn" industry, ruling Congress had gone too far in passing a law banning all sexually oriented phone message services.

1994 The movie "Forrest Gump," starring Tom Hanks as a simple yet kindhearted soul and his serendipitous brushes with greatness, was released by Paramount Pictures.

In The Star

June 23, 1939, in The Star: Funeral services for Prof. W. J. Young, a widely known local teacher, were conducted this afternoon at the residence, 1130 Leighton Avenue. Mr. Young taught for 53 years in Calhoun and Cleburne County schools before retiring in 1927. He was a charter member of Eulaton Baptist Church. Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Sudie Young, three sons and three daughters. Mr. Young died two days ago at age 83. Also this date: The new concrete bridge over Choccolocco Creek near Talladega will be formally dedicated July 4 in a ceremony to be attended by Congressman Sam Hobbs, it was announced today.

June 23, 1989, in The Star: The Calhoun County region is getting a dry-out break today from the heavy rain that’s inundated the land during the past week. Also this date: A series of photos on Page 16B shows Anniston Star chief photographer Ken Elkins at work in several locations, as captured through the lens of the newspaper’s summer photo intern, Scott Milder of the University of Texas.
