Darden takes note of the number of small loan and finance companies in Anniston — something like 15 or 16, he’s been told — and how they use “interest and handling charges” to keep unsophisticated borrowers in debt to them far beyond the value of the loan. Mr. Darden is asking elected leaders, including the local city commission, to join a campaign to “correct this situation.” Also this date: King Motor Co., 110 E. 11th St., is advertising a used car sale in which the buyer’s former car with title counts as first payment on one of the modern used cars being offered, e.g., 1937 Plymouth coupe, $447; 1933 Oldsmobile coupe, $237; or a Model A Ford, no year listed, just $97.

June 9, 1989, in The Star: The Calhoun County Commission yesterday made official its intention that recycling be promoted in its offices.
