Small Talk: Junior League celebrates major accomplishments
In the midst of celebrating the completion of yet another highly successful year and making plans for the upcoming year, the Junior League of Anniston-Calhoun, Inc., enjoyed their annual May Dinner earlier this month at Classic on Noble. The Junior League presented $15,300 to local organizations and scholarships, including United Way Imagination Library, $4,000; Children's Services-Parris Home for Children, $4,000; Coosa Valley Youth Services $4,000; DayBreak Crisis Center, $1,250; Community Actors' Studio Theatre, $300; and Golden Springs Elementary School's Field Day, $250. This year's Nancy Julian Distinguished Young Woman award went to Ohatchee High School's Holly Borden. Holly received a $1,000 scholarship, which she will use to attend Gadsden State Community College in the fall. Also, through the Lisa Bobo Scholarship, the Junior League will once again be able to send two students from Saks Middle School to the YMCA summer camp. Around 100 guests looked on as the Junior League passed the gavel from outgoing president Gail Tillman to incoming president Erin Woodruff, and recognized over thirty incoming provisional members as well as six new sustaining members. Keynote speaker for the evening was Jason Granholm from Coosa Valley Youth Service's Camp Lewis. With each passing year, the Junior League of Anniston-Calhoun is growing stronger in our community. Plans for the upcoming year include special interest activities involving Art with Artists, Coosa Valley Youth Services, and Kids in the Kitchen (a program with an emphasis on the prevention of childhood obesity). Also, the JLAC will continue with their annual fundraisers, Winter Treasures Market (Oct. 24-25 at the Anniston City Meeting Center) and the morbidly fun Murder Mystery Dinner Theater, slated for February 2009. Combined, the events should raise close to $60,000, which will in turn help the needs of our community. |
