Small Talk: Fairytales with a twist
The Revelers Krewe opened February with its annual ball — this year, A Reveler's Fairytale — and the Anniston Country Club was the perfect billowy, sparkly, enchanted venue for fair princesses and prancing fairies (and moody dwarfs and hungry wolves alike) to celebrate with a grand production. This year's queen, Samantha Hughston, was escorted by John Deno and flanked by court members and escorts Alison and Chris Landers, Cindy and Terry Phillis, Florence and Bryan Cuneo, and Farley and Jeff Fink. Guests of the court included Michele and Rusty Savage of Huntsville, plus Chris and Julie Dimes of Warner Robbins, Ga., (all guests of Alison Landers) along with Glenda and Ed Baggett of Talladega (guests of Florence Cuneo.) After introducing the court, emcee Rob Svensen announced the skits as the audience waited expectantly for what was sure to be a most entertaining evening. In Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, a classic fairytale took on an intriguing, hilarious meaning, thanks to Kathy and Richard Pope, Jennifer and Tripp Farrell, Kelli and Scott Roberts, plus Amy Bellin and Mitch Staples. Watching and grinning from the audience were Amy's guests, Bob and Jean Jaudon, of Auburn, and Mike and Toni Flinn of Powder Springs, Ga. It's fun to stay at the….why?? Well, the Village People explained it all. Representing various and sundry professions — and persuasions — were Nikki and David Christian, Michelle and Chuck Love, Erna and Gordon Hardy, and Donna Davenport (who elicited loads of laughter from guests Craig and Susie Beckwith of Huntsville and Pamela Jones of Tallassee.) The glass slipper, the handsome prince…. it was Cinderella, with a twist— as Deborah and Rick Westbrook, Donna and Brian Woodfin, and Mitzi and Jeff Collins strutted their stuff for the crowd and proved the theory that beauty is indeed in the eye of the beholder... In the Land of Oz, Karen and Jack Guyton, Wendy and Hank Osteen, Julie and Joe Escue and Jona and Manny Suco followed the yellow brick road to meet the Wizard — and more! — as Chris and Julie Dimes of Warner Robbins, Ga., (guests of the Escues) and Michele and Rusty Savage of Huntsville (guests of the Sucos) rubbernecked from the audience. Top 10 Anniston Fairytales had everyone in stitches, as Lisa and Mark Cotton (whose guest, Bo Burke, of Birmingham watched from the audience), Alice and Chris Abernathy, plus Kristie and Jason Alderman translated local legend into primo entertainment. Who wins the race? In Tortoise and the Hare, it was anyone's guess, as Kim and Barry Billings, Barbara and Patrick Cushman, Lesley and Michael Hudson, and Lucy and Henry Smith brought the tale of speed versus sloth to life. Little Red Riding Hood showed the big, bad wolf just who was boss with skit members Lucy and Mike Wiedmer, Deana and Eric Douglas (whose guests, Terry and Lynda Mobley of Owens Cross Roads looked on with amusement) plus Sheri and Patrick Ballard (and their fans in the audience, Dr. and Mrs. Steven Robinson of Birmingham.) Who's the Fairest of Them All gave guests the chance to see the lightheartedness of the ladies — and the softer, prettier sides of their men — as Ashley and Grant Martin, Nancy and Ted Cromwell, Abby and Clay Bass, and Jennifer and Brian Tucker traipsed merrily about the stage. A Reveler's King in Search of a Queen featured beauties and beaus Amy and David Emerson, Shelley and Clint Ray, and Stephen and April LaFollette. April's sister and brother-in-law, Andrea and Dusty Kilgore of Madison, looked on from the crowd. Princesses Gone Wild was a hoot for post-prime-time viewers, and featured the assets of Sandy Rothwell, Beverly Cross, Monica and John Baker (cheered on by Mr. and Mrs. Randall Rigsby of Heflin), Laura and David Alexander, and Wendy Ghee Draper (whose sister, Lindsay Ghee, of Tuscaloosa watched from the crowd.) A Fort Fairytale opened the doors to a whole new world with Karen and Russ Connell, Leigh and Barry Twigg (cheered on by Greg and Tina Mills of Hoover), Sarah and Jared King, and Cindy and Bob Cater. Revelers Krewe president is Amy Bellin, and ball chairman was Kelli Roberts. |
