HO, HO, WHOA! Adventures of a Santa pet photographer

If you thought a hyperactive Labrador was tough to wrangle for a family photo, or that it was impossible to make your sassy Siamese look loving for the camera, try hemming in a 200-pound Vietnamese pot-bellied pig bent on destruction.

When Kyle Cruse takes his German shepherd, Drako, for a walk around Oxford Lake, he has to be quick snapping on the leash. Otherwise, the shaggy, doe-eyed dog begins to methodically inspect each car in the parking lot.

5 super simple ways you (yes, you) can help dogs in need
Updated: July 19, 2014 - 10:49 pm

Tell me if this sounds familiar: You’re scrolling through Facebook, minding your own business ... well, sort of — when suddenly you’re staring into the face of an “Urgent! Death Row Dog” who must have “rescue or foster by tomorrow or his time is up.” And like a Sarah McLachlan commercial during a rerun of “The Office,” that Grumpy Cat meets Racist Kermit mashup meme doesn’t seem that funny anymore.

Pet of the Month: Kingston

If there’s one thing rescue groups all agree they never have enough of, it’s adoptions. Kingston is one of the lucky ones who found his forever home with the help of Piper’s Rescue.

I always like to say that the first person I met upon moving to Anniston was Roams, the golden retriever who lived across the street, so named because that’s what he did.

Their pout is worse than their bite

Seriously, to the list of acceptable reasons for being late to work, along with alarm clock malfunctions and flat tires, I'd like to strongly urge we add doggie guilt trips.

Keep calm and stroll on: DIY dog stroller puts the friendly back in pet-friendly
Updated: June 14, 2014 - 9:50 pm

I’m still pretty shaky on two-leash dog walking. Toss in a third, especially one with a textbook Napoleon complex and a knack for coaxing my two lunatics’ barking into a riotous howl session, and you see why I might have concerns. I decided before descending on a city park filled with more sights, sounds and unsniffed dogs than you can shake a double leash at that we’d better have an exit strategy.

Horsing around: Kids find good, clean fun — and a calling — at Circle C Saddle Club
Updated: May 23, 2014 - 12:13 pm

Although these races are the focus of the next set of competitions at Circle C May 31, the show also features categories like racking, in which horses perform a sort of prancing run, or costume classes, where kids dress up their ponies — like young Ella Doriot’s Pocahontas-themed costume with her pony, Prince Charming.

A place to park it: Bark, borrow or steal it, but Calhoun County’s got to have a dog park
Updated: June 15, 2014 - 4:28 pm

We came close to getting a dog park last summer, so very close. You may recall frequent reminders in this column to vote for Oxford in PetSafe’s $100,000 Bark for Your Park contest (“twice a day, every day” — ring a bell?). We made it to the second round — 15 cities out of an original pool of more than 1,000 ... so close, so very, very close.

A fine fix: 'Dega Night' draws funds, focus to pet overpopulation
Updated: June 15, 2014 - 4:29 pm

A couple of months back, the furkids and I were taking advantage of an unexpected warm day with a stroll around Oxford Lake. And of course by “warm,” I mean warm for February. And by “stroll,” I mean “stroll” for Kollee, which is to say there was a distinct zigzag pattern to it. I remember because when a pair of ducks made a run for the water, she zigged when I thought she would zag, slinging us Koopa-first into a gentleman with far better coordination than we.
