A free community event, sponsored by New Mount Zion Church of Anniston, will be from 1-5 p.m. Saturday at Zinn Park, 14th Street and Gurnee Avenue. There will be free back-to-school supplies (while supplies last), free hotdogs and free admission to a concert. Local churches and sponsors will provide free prizes and discounted services, such as haircuts/nails, massage therapy and more. Entertainment will be provided by Pda Drama (praise dancing), Infamous, Chozen, and more.

A free gardening program “Tough Plants for Southern Gardens”, presented by Jason Powell of Petals from the Past, will be held noon-1 p.m. Wednesday at Cane Creek Community Gardens. Bring your lunch. A Canadian island trip with Doris Hann is planned for Aug. 31-Sept. 10. The trip will include a tour of Quebec and Montreal, a whale excursion, a three-night stay on the Island of Courdres, and on the way home a stop will be made at the Made in America Store in Elma, N.Y. Gadsden State Community College female students interested in competing for the Miss Gadsden State Community College pageant crown are encouraged to submit an application by 4 p.m. Sept. 22. An orientation session for contestants will be held at 2 p.m. Sept. 23 in the Wallace Hall Fine Arts Center, room 128. The pageant is part of the Miss America Organization. The Miss Gadsden State pageant will be held Nov. 7 at Wallace Hall in Gadsden.
