In a few short months, Ben Tomlinson will move out of his parents’ home and into his own home next door. September is the anticipated date Tomlinson’s Smart House will be completed.

In the meantime, Tomlinson is watching the day to day construction.

Even though the area has experienced a lot of rain recently, Tomlinson’s mother, Debbie, said the weather hasn’t slowed construction. There’s a lot of work that can be done inside even though it’s raining, she said.

“They’ve poured concrete for the carport, finished the framing for the fireplace, and put all the studs in,” said Tomlinson. “The roof is on, and they’ve started bricking it. They haven’t started doing the sheet rock yet. It’s looking very pretty.”

Tomlinson was interviewed last week by Mike Royer of television station WVTM in Birmingham and expressed his feelings on getting his own home.

Tomlinson has chosen the masculine colors of gray and brown for the inside. Grayseal, based in Louisville, Ky., is donating the paint. Mohawk Flooring and Carpet One are making donations.

Tomlinson was shot on a tour of duty in Afghanistan in 2009 and is paralyzed from the neck down. The house is being built by a partnership between the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation and the Gary Sinise Foundation.

Don James is building the home.
