Anita Kilgore and Lori Tippets garnered four awards collectively for The Jacksonville News at the 2014 Alabama Press Association Better Newspaper Contest recently.
Kilgore has won awards consistently in the contest since the early ‘90s. She began her career at the News in ad layout and later went into photography, page layout, editing and production.
“Anita is the most talented photographer I have worked with in my 41 years in the newspaper business,” Publisher John Alred said. “She has won an award every year I have been with Consolidated Publishing.
“Lori also has a keen eye for photos. It is hard for sports photographers because you only have a second to catch the action. You can’t repose an action sports picture. Lori is also a consistent winner in the APA contest.
“I am very proud of these two talented ladies.”
Tippets, who writes sports for the News, has brought home several awards through the years.
Kilgore won 2nd place in Best Photo Essay for her photos on the 150th anniversary celebration of Maj. John Pelham. She won 3rd place for Best Feature Photo for “Child Praying” and 3rd place Best News Photo “Warm Welcome.”
Tippets won 2nd place for Best Sports Photo.
Seventy newspapers submitted 2,606 entries in the annual contest.
