• The House of Refuse will begin its Backyard Bible School on Saturday, June 14, with a field trip to Noccalula Falls in Gadsden from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. For more information call Pearl Williams at 256-435-4881.

The next meeting for NAMI Jacksonville is on Tuesday, June 10th at 6 p.m. at K.L. Brown Funeral Home Community Room on Alabama 204 in Jacksonville.  There will be a board meeting at 5 p.m.

• The singing group, formerly known as Mighty River, will be singing at the 11 a.m. service Sunday, June 15, at Nances Creek Baptist Church located eight miles east of Jacksonville on Hollingsworth Road or five miles south of Piedmont off Alabama 9. A nursery will be provided. For more infrmation call 256-310-7216.

Knit and Crochet Night is every 1st and 3rd Thursday at Yarns by HPF, 402 Pelham Road N, Jacksonville (near Subway).  Come join us, relax and enjoy the lighter side of life.

• The Farmers Market, in the pocket park behind Roma’s, is now open from 8 a.m.-noon on Saturdays until Nov. 1. On June 2, it will be open from 4-6 p.m. on Mondays until Sept. 1. The market accepts EBT, debit and credit cards and SFMNP food vouchers.

Dementia and Alzheimers’ Support Group will meet on the 2nd Wednesday of every month at the Jacksonville Senior Center from 2:30-4 p.m. A counselor will facilitate the meetings. For more information call Andrea Morris at 256-435-9199

   • An eating healthy workshop developed by the U. S. Department of Health and Services and the Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, will be presented at the Cane Creek Community Garden and Education Center, 77 Justice Ave. The workshop is designed for individuals and families to come together in a fun and interactive setting to learn about eating healthier and putting more activity into their everyday life. The workshop will be May 20 from 1-2 p.m. It is “Physical Activity Is Key to Living Well.” Call Sharon Haynes at 256-975-0089 for more information.  

       • A series of free gardening programs sponsored by the Calhoun County Master Gardeners will be held from noon - 1 p.m. the fourth Wednesday of the month from April through September at Cane Creek Community Gardens, McClellan. Please bring your lunch. For more information call the Calhoun County Extension Office at 256-237-1621.

•July 23: Dani Carroll, ACES, “Creating a Bee Friendly Garden”

•Aug. 27: Jason Powell, Petals from the Past, “Tough Plants for Southern Gardens.”

•Sept. 24: Hayes Jackson, ACES, “Easy Plants for Difficult Places.”

The White Plains Alumni Association is having a membership drive. Those eligible are graduates of White Plains, attendees who may not have graduated, and persons who may not have attended White Plains but desires to support the schools and students. The White Plains Alumni Association awarded four $1,000 college scholarships to deserving White Plains seniors last year. Donations pay for these annual scholarships.
